Bandyup Women’s Prison is a maximum-security prison for women prisoners which was opened in 1970. Originally, accommodating remand and sentenced prisoners, it now mainly accommodates sentenced women.
After many years of concern about the incidence of mental illness among women in prison, A Wing in Unit 1 was converted into the Bindi Bindi Mental Health Unit which opened in 2021.
