The Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services has announced it will be inspecting Hakea Prison between 6 – 15 May 2024.
The inspection will be focussing on staffing, infrastructure, services, health and mental health supports, and the quality of life for people held at the facility including time spent out of cell. The inspection will also consider the facility’s role as the primary remand centre for male prisoners and the increase in sentenced prisoners being placed at the facility.
This will be the Office’s eighth inspection of Hakea Prison. The previous inspection occurred in 2021 and found many of Hakea’s services were operating effectively. However, the inspection made a number of findings in relation to health and mental health services, including a lack of therapeutic care being offered to people experiencing mental health crises.
The inspection report is expected to be tabled in the first quarter of 2025.
