The Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services has announced it will be inspecting the Boronia Pre-release Centre for Women between 24 – 29 March 2024.
Boronia is the only minimum-security pre-release facility for women in Western Australia.
It opened in 2004 and can accommodate up to 95 residents. There is also capacity for children, up to the age of four, to reside on-site with their mothers. Overnight visits are also available for children up to the age of 12.
This will be the Office’s seventh inspection of the pre-release facility for women in custody. The previous inspection occurred in May 2021 and found the facility provided meaningful opportunities for women in the final stage of the incarceration journey. Despite this, the inspection identified opportunities for improvement and made 14 recommendations to the Department of Justice.
The inspection report is expected to be tabled in the fourth quarter of 2024.
